India has 59 apps from Chinese companies, including TikTok, WeChat and Tencent’s QQ music.
India is reportedly TikTok’s biggest market outside of China.
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said the apps were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order” and concerns about data mining and profiling.
“The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defense of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” added the ministry.
The ban comes amid increased tensions between China and India.
